Department Vision: To prepare students to become successful cosmetologists by facilitating the development of professional skills and knowledge.

Cosmetology students should be able to display an interest in the field, as well as enjoy working with people and being creative. In order to do this, we will utilize the superior educational opportunities of Career and Technical Education, provide exceptional quality customer service, employ a positive attitude when in the classroom or serving others, maintain an efficient stance concerning class time, learning objectives and be generous and hardworking when concerning client satisfaction.

Course Description:  The cosmetology program is a sequence of courses that prepares students for entry-level employment and career paths for continuing education in the field of cosmetology. The learning opportunities develop academic and professional knowledge and skills for successful job acquisitions and retention. This program emphasizes training in lab safety, sanitation, hair care treatments, skin and nail care, customer service, and salon management. The subject matter is presented by lectures, PowerPoint presentations, demonstrations, guest speakers, field trips, and other related learning methods. When the course has been completed the students have an obligation to be able to ensure for themselves a positive attitude, a personal sense of self confidence, an effective use of communication skills, visual poise, and proper grooming. Students should also have learned to build a healthy relationship among peers, teachers, and clients. By completing courses in the personal care services pathways, students can potentially earn credit   towards the hours required by the Georgia State Board of Cosmetology.

Course Prerequisites: Students must be at least 16 years of age and have completed general health, math, and science courses.

GPS Standards: Standards Notebook is available for review

Student Participation: Students are expected to be in class daily, however, attendance is defined as evidence of engagement with the assignment.  Attendance can be measured in the following ways:
  • Google Classroom/Microsoft Teams check-in
  • Assignments submitted that were due on that day
  • Questions to answer Google Classroom/Microsoft Teams
  • Participation in online discussion
  • Class participation during synchronous session
  • Login to synchronous session
  • Phone call or email with parent/guardian or related services provider

Absence Policy: Students are expected to be in class daily. When absent from class you MUST have an email from parent/healthcare professional for an excused absence. The excuse should be brought the following day that student logs back into class.  Failure to present an excuse by the 2nd day after absence will result in student not receiving assigned work, and a zero in the gradebook and no credit for the day.

*Please note.  Each student is required to have an excused absence for their cross enrolled class in addition to your home school classes.   The Infinite Campus system DOES NOT cross over between schools.  If you do not have an email of your excused absence from a parent or guardian, you will be marked absent for your cross enrolled class time.

ONLINE ASSIGNMENTS:  All Cengage/Google Classroom assignments must be submitted by due date/time given by the instructor.  No assignments will be accepted or extended once class has started or once due date and time have passed. Failure to do so will result in a zero in the gradebook for each missed assignment.

VIRTUAL PROFESSIONAL IMAGEStudents must adhere to a professional image at all times.  Students are expected to dress appropriately at all times. In all cases, dress must be consistent with good safety practices of the cosmetology setting. No laying in the bed during class time.  NO HEAD BONNETS/PAJAMAS.  HEAD WRAPS/SCARFS MUST BE FASHIONABLY WORN (unless for religious purposes).

Work Ethic/Professionalism Grade:
Students are required to maintain a professional attitude while in class and exhibit good work ethics. Each student will start with 100 points for this particular area, but each time a student breaks one of the class/lab rules, unprepared for class/lab (ex. improper class/lab attire, no smock, disrespectful to teacher/peers, etc.) you will receive deducted points for each offense. At the end of each week all deductions will be added up and deducted from the 100 points. This will determine your Work Ethic Grade.
Example: 100 points automatically given.
Michael received a 50point professionalism grade deduction
100 points – 50 = 50 (Michael’s work ethic grade for the week)

Classroom Breaks:
Please do not leave the virtual classroom without permission.   Please send me a separate chat for any type of emergencies.  There will be breaks throughout the session. Please utilize this time to use the restroom, grab some water, or a snack. There is lunch time scheduled throughout your school day.  Unless you are in my afternoon class, please do not take it upon yourself to have lunch and learn unless specified by the instructor. If you are not back by the designated time, the following consequences will take place:

1st offense - Verbal Warning
2nd offense – Point deductions for unexcused tardiness to class. Email parent.
3rd offense – 2nd offense and referral via infinite campus.

Failure to follow any of the policies below will result in a deduction of points from work ethnic/professionalism grade or in some cases OSS!!!!

  • Remain in your virtual class and work on the essential question/sponge activity of the day once you enter the google classroom.

  • Each student is required to make their video visible while in class is in session.  If not, you will be marked absent.
