HEALTH AND WELLNESS FAIR
Before the holidays on December 16, Cross Keys SkillsUSA members provided a successful and beneficial community service while displaying their technical skills. Working alongside healthcare professionals, SkillsUSA members provided basic screening services, demonstrations, and health-related information and materials. Members staffed 10 stations, using their technical skills to become a valuable resource to the community.
Students from multiple technical classes participated. Criminal Justice students oversaw stress manage tables; nursing students conducted vision and blood pressure screenings; computer science took care of graphic design for flyers, banners and signs; construction students handled set-up and provided a safety booth; and so on. While the face to face health fair was going on, Computer Science students provided a virtual health fair for those that could not attend. Hawa Keita stated, “I learned so much from doing the health fair. Everything we learned in class was demonstrated at both fairs”.

On January 17,2020, Cross Keys SkillsUSA visited the Aviation Institute of Maintenance to tour the aircraft facility and learn more about their programs.
Ms. Sherita Sutton, Educational Outreach Coordinator, had visited our school to discuss “Personality Profiles”. She invited the chapter to tour the Institute. The Chapter’s Health and Safety Committee wanted to observe their safety procedures that are in place for aircraft training.
A SATURDAY WITH VETERANS
On December 14, the Cross Keys High School SkillsUSA Chapter spent their Saturday playing BINGO with hospitalized veterans at the Veterans Medical Center. Members demonstrated the essential elements of work ethics and responsibility as they assisted the veterans playing Bingo. Ashley Portillo stated that “these veterans take Bingo very serious.” The veterans immediately wanted to know what the prized was. Members had to donate $2.00 per game to the winners. Using their professional skills, each member was responsible for assisting a veteran.
After a total of eight games, Members had an opportunity to talk with the veterans about their military. Gustavo talked with his veteran about his service in the air force. Gustavo stated that “Mr. Johnson was injured in World War II and it has been bothering it ever since.” Theirno who called out the numbers stated “let’s do this again, they liked us being with them”.
CHILD IDENTIFICATION CARD SERVICES
On December 12, Cross Keys SkillsUSA Chapter went beyond the call of duty in completing their community service project. This year’s project, Child Identification Card Services, was designed to provide ID cards to children under the age of 13. Criminal justice student, Anahi Varela, stated, with more than five children missing per day, this information could assist law enforcement authorities in locating missing children. We need to do this.”
This purpose of this project was also to enhance our job specific skills learned in the classroom. Members from construction, computer technology, criminal justice and healthcare science had an opportunity to display skills acquired in their technical classes to complete the Child Identification Card Services.
Alexa Giron stated that her computer skills were definitely tested in this project. SkillsUSA members completed more than one hundred child ID cards.
